China's high-speed rail is one of the best ways to travel around the country—it's fast, comfortable, and punctual, way better than flights for short and medium trips. But if it's your first time, you may not know how to use it. Here's the complete guide!
1. How to Buy Tickets
You can buy tickets:
- **Online**: Use Trip.com, or the official 12306 app (but it's mostly in Chinese, so we recommend Trip.com for foreigners). You can use your passport to buy tickets, and you will get an e-ticket.
- **At the station**: You can buy tickets at the ticket window, just show your passport. Or use the ticket machine, but most of them only accept Chinese ID card, so we recommend the window for foreigners.
> **Tip**: Buy your tickets early! High-speed rail tickets are sold out quickly during holidays and peak seasons.
2. Arrive at the Station Early!
Chinese high-speed rail stations are **huge**—much bigger than train stations in many other countries. And you need to go through security check before entering. We recommend you arrive at the station **45-60 minutes before your train departure**, so you have enough time to find your gate.
3. Boarding the Train
- You don't need to pick up a paper ticket! With your e-ticket, you can just scan your passport at the gate, and get in.
- Find your carriage and seat. The seat number is like "08 Carriage 12A", which means Carriage 8, Seat 12A. The carriage number will be shown on the train, and the platform screen.
- The train will leave on time, don't be late! It will not wait for late passengers.
4. On the Train
There are different seat classes:
- **Second Class**: The cheapest, 5 seats in a row (3+2), comfortable enough for short trips.
- **First Class**: 4 seats in a row (2+2), more legroom, quieter.
- **Business Class**: The most luxury, 3 seats in a row, huge seat that can lie flat, perfect for long trips.
- There is hot water on the train, and you can buy food and drinks from the dining car, or the trolley.
- The train is very stable, you can work or sleep on it, no need to worry about bumping.
